Clagett Butte rises to 8,041 feet in elevation, positioned between Clematis Creek and Snow Pass within the Gallatin Range of Yellowstone National Park.
The summit received its name in 1926 from park photographer Jack Ellis Haynes and superintendent Horace Albright to honor William H. Clagett's role in establishing Yellowstone.
The mountain carried three different names before 1926: Temple Mountain in 1885, Sentinel Butte in 1887, and Signal Butte in 1897.
The Clagett Butte Trail extends 1.1 miles with a 250-foot elevation gain, connecting Snow Pass Trail to Sepulcher Mountain Trail at 7,485 feet.
This geological formation stands 1.9 miles west of Mammoth Hot Springs and features power lines along its trail system at coordinates 44°57′52″N 110°44′06″W.
