Golden Gate Canyon, Natural canyon in Yellowstone National Park, US.
Golden Gate Canyon is a narrow gorge in Yellowstone National Park where Glen Creek flows northward between steep rock walls. The valley connects Mammoth Hot Springs to the southern sections of the park and descends significantly along its length.
A road was first built through the canyon between 1884 and 1885, replacing an earlier mountain route that was difficult to maintain. The new passage became essential for connecting the northern and southern sections of the park.
The canyon received its name from early visitors who noticed the distinctive yellow coloration of the rock formations within the geological structure.
The canyon can be easily reached by driving the Grand Loop Road, which passes directly through it year-round. Visitors can pull over to view the geological formations and flowing creek from several points along the route.
The valley is crossed by several impressive viaducts built over the past century to safely carry traffic across the gorge. The most recent structure was completed in the 1970s and remains an engineering feature that visitors often overlook while driving through.
