Dinosaur Park Formation

Dinosaur Park Formation is a geological layer in southern Alberta composed of sandstone, siltstone, and mudstone from the Late Cretaceous period. These deposits contain abundant fossils preserved within the rock layers.

This formation developed roughly 76 to 75 million years ago when rivers carried sediments from western mountains into the Bearpaw Sea. These conditions preserved countless organisms from that ancient time.

Researchers from around the world gather here to study ancient ecosystems and share findings about how creatures lived during the Cretaceous period. The fossils reveal relationships between different species and how they adapted to their environment.

You can explore this formation through Dinosaur Provincial Park, which maintains walking paths and offers guided tours. Sturdy footwear is recommended, and it helps to check locally which areas are currently accessible.

This location stands out for its exceptionally high concentration of complete skeletons from more than fifty different species. Some fossils preserve traces of soft tissue, which is extremely rare.
