Gething Formation, Sandstone formation in British Columbia, Canada.
The Gething Formation is a sandstone formation in the Peace River area of British Columbia that consists of layered sedimentary rocks of varying thickness. It contains marine shale deposits with fossilized remains of ancient marine life.
Scientists first described and named this formation in 1944 when they defined its type locality in the Lower Peace River region. The discovery helped establish understanding of geological layers across this area.
The rocks here show traces of ancient sea life, with shells and small fossils visible in the layers. These remains tell the story of a warm ocean that once covered this region long ago.
You can observe the rock layers in this region, though detailed geological study requires specialized fieldwork. Access to certain areas may be restricted to protect research sites and the exposed rock faces.
The rocks contain ironstone nodules that hold rare fossils of coiled sea creatures within them. These fossils are found in very few places elsewhere in the world and make this site noteworthy for fossil enthusiasts.
