Elk Island National Park, National park and dark sky preserve in Alberta, Canada

The park spans across rolling hills and lakes, providing a natural habitat for plains bison, wood bison, moose, deer, and over 250 bird species.

Established in 1913, the park became a sanctuary for bison conservation after nearly all North American populations were eliminated in the late 1800s.

The land holds deep connections to Indigenous peoples, including Cree and Métis communities who maintained relationships with the wildlife and terrain.

Located 35 minutes east of Edmonton, the park offers year-round activities such as hiking, canoeing, cross-country skiing, and wildlife observation programs.

The park functions as part of the Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve, creating optimal conditions for northern lights viewing and astronomical observation.
