Wabamun Formation, Limestone geological formation in Alberta, Canada.
The Wabamun Formation is a limestone layer in central Alberta composed of dolomitic limestone and calcareous dolomite. The rock layers extend across a large area and reach depths of about 240 meters (790 feet) below the surface.
The formation was first documented in 1950 through oil drilling near Wabamun Lake. This discovery marked the start of systematic exploration of this rock layer.
The formation serves as a resource for geological studies, providing information about Earth's composition during the Late Devonian Famennian period.
The formation lies beneath the surface and is not easily accessible to visitors. Information about this rock layer can best be found in museums and geological centers in the region.
The layer contains different mineral concentrations at various depths: pyrite appears in the upper sections, while salt and anhydrite gather in lower areas. These variations reflect different conditions during the formation's development.
