Al-Rashid Mosque, First mosque in Edmonton, Canada
The Al-Rashid Mosque stands at Fort Edmonton Park, featuring architecture that incorporates elements from Ukrainian Catholic and Orthodox church designs.
Built in 1938 through community fundraising efforts led by Hilwie Hamdon, the mosque represents the establishment of Islamic worship spaces in Canada.
The mosque serves as an educational center, providing Arabic language instruction, Quran recitation classes, and religious education in its basement facilities.
The building underwent relocation to Fort Edmonton Park in 1991 at a cost of $75,000 to preserve its historical structure for future generations.
Local Ukrainian-Canadian contractor Mike Drewoth supervised the construction, creating a prayer space that merged Islamic requirements with local architectural influences.
