McGee Creek Reservoir, body of water

McGee Creek Reservoir is a large earthen dam in Atoka County, Oklahoma, completed in 1987 to hold water from McGee Creek and several smaller streams. When full, the reservoir covers about 3,000 acres with a shoreline of approximately 64 miles and reaches depths exceeding 100 feet near the dam.

The dam was completed in 1987 as part of a water supply project for towns like Atoka and Antlers and the broader Oklahoma City area. Since its completion, the reservoir has become a vital water resource for local communities, agriculture, and industry.

The land around McGee Creek Reservoir was historically used for farming and grazing before the dam was built. Today, visitors come to experience a rural setting where outdoor recreation and nature observation shape how people spend their time.

The area is easily accessible from State Highway 3 southeast of Atoka and offers campgrounds for tents and RVs with basic facilities including restrooms and trash disposal stations. Visitors should bring supplies since there are no large shopping centers or restaurants nearby, though picnic areas and boat ramps are available throughout the property.

One of the inflow streams, Potapo Creek, is believed to have a name derived from the Choctaw language, meaning floor or bridge. This connection to Native American heritage adds a layer of cultural depth to the landscape that many visitors overlook.
