Mohamed bin Zayed Nature Reserve, Wildlife park and nature reserve in Sakhir, Bahrain
Mohamed bin Zayed Nature Reserve, known locally as Al Areen, lies in Sakhir and covers 800 hectares split into two 400-hectare halves: one open to the public, the other a restricted reserve with two surface reservoirs. The public side holds an aviary, an Arabian wild animals complex, a falcon stadium and a petting zoo opened in 2014 with Viva Bahrain sponsorship. Tour buses run from the main entrance.
The reserve was first established in 1976 and covers 800 hectares, split into two 400-hectare sections: one open to the public and one kept as a protected reserve with two surface reservoirs. In 2014 a falcon stadium and petting zoo opened under the sponsorship of Viva Bahrain, after earlier additions of an aviary and an Arabian wild animals complex. As of 1999 the park was attached to the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs and Information.
The park houses regional animal species such as Arabian oryx and Persian gazelles that represent the natural heritage of the Gulf region. These animals hold deep meaning for local people as symbols of the desert landscape that shaped Bahraini culture.
Entry to the reserve section is restricted to specialists, researchers, veterinarians and animal keepers, and requires prior permission. Visitors see the animals from tour buses that leave from the main entrance. The park is a 40-minute drive from Manama on the highway, next to Bahrain International Circuit.
The reserve is split into two 400-hectare halves: one open to the public, the other a protected zone with two surface reservoirs for flora and fauna. A falcon stadium and petting zoo opened in 2014 under the sponsorship of Viva Bahrain.
