On January 16, 1977, eighty mercenaries attacked Cotonou, leading to a three-hour battle where seven defenders, including six military personnel and one civilian, lost their lives.
The Place du Souvenir serves as a central location for national ceremonies, military wreath-laying events, and exhibitions of local artists in its underground gallery.
