Church of St. Nicholas of the Roof

The Church of St. Nicholas of the Roof is a Byzantine house of worship with a wooden structure, its central dome covered with flat tiles and a cross-shaped interior layout. The building sits in the Troödos mountains near Kakopetria village and can be reached via marked pathways from the main road.

The building was constructed in the 11th century as a monastery church and received wall paintings over six centuries of artistic development. The layers of these artworks show different phases of religious and artistic expression that accumulated in this space.

The walls inside contain detailed frescoes showing religious scenes, including moments from the life of Jesus and the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. These paintings reflect how people expressed their faith through art over many centuries.

The location sits in a hilly, forested area and is reachable on foot, so wearing comfortable shoes is helpful. The interior is often dim, so a flashlight helps you see the wall paintings more clearly.

This is the only surviving Middle Byzantine monastery church from the 11th century in Cyprus and still retains its original architectural features. The roof construction with flat tiles is a rare detail showing how craftspeople worked with local materials in that era.
