Painted Churches in the Troödos Region, Byzantine churches in Troödos Mountains, Cyprus.

The Painted Churches in the Troödos Region are ten mountain churches located in the Nicosia and Limassol districts decorated with detailed Byzantine frescoes. Their walls feature biblical narratives and depictions of saints rendered in the artistic style characteristic of the Byzantine period.

These churches were constructed between the 11th and 16th centuries in a region that became part of the Byzantine Empire after 965. They developed alongside the political and religious history of Cyprus throughout this extended period.

The interior walls display religious imagery created over centuries using different painting techniques while maintaining Orthodox Christian traditions. You can see how artistic style varies from church to church while the sacred subjects remain consistent.

Most of these churches are remote and best reached by private car, as public transportation is limited in the mountains. It makes sense to contact local caretakers beforehand to confirm access and learn about opening times.

The churches feature steep wooden roofs covered with tiles, specifically designed to protect against heavy mountain snowfall. This traditional roof design also helps preserve the precious wall paintings inside from moisture and weather damage.
