Limassol District, District in southern Cyprus
The district extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the Troodos Mountains and contains more than a hundred communities as well as the second largest city of Cyprus. The landscape includes coastal regions, mountainous terrain, and numerous small settlements in between.
Archaeological discoveries reveal ancient settlements dating to the 7th century BC, including ruins of the cities Amathus and Kourion. The area subsequently came under the control of different powers that shaped its cultural heritage.
The area preserves medieval structures such as Kolossi Castle, built by the Knights Hospitaller, and churches in the Troodos Mountains featuring Byzantine frescoes on their walls.
The district functions as a maritime center with two major ports handling passenger traffic and cargo between Cyprus and international destinations. The coastal areas are easily accessible, while the mountainous regions require private transport.
The Kouris River flows through the area and forms valleys that offer scenic views to visitors passing through. The Kouris Dam is the largest water reservoir on the island and supplies water to extensive areas.
