Anogyra, Rural community in Limassol District, Cyprus

Anogyra is a rural community in Limassol District, situated at 455 meters elevation in a hilly region surrounded by orchards and vineyards. The settlement is characterized by carob, almond, and wine cultivation, with buildings scattered along narrow lanes featuring traditional stone construction.

Human settlement in the area dates back to the Neolithic period, with Romans documenting it as Onogyra in their records. The village church was built in the late 18th century, marking a significant architectural development in the community.

The Church of Archangel Michael shapes the village center with its late baroque style and Gothic relief carvings visible on the exterior walls. Visitors can spot an old sundial still mounted above the church entrance, serving as a charming reminder of past timekeeping.

A museum housed in a former school building displays traditional pasteli-making techniques, giving visitors insight into local carob craftsmanship. The village is roughly 45 kilometers from Limassol city and is best reached by car for comfortable access.

Each September, the village hosts a Pasteli Festival where visitors can watch the making of sweets from carob juice using methods passed down for centuries. The festival demonstrates how this traditional craft remains alive in the community.
