Asprokremmos Reservoir, reservoir on the Asprokremmos river in Cyprus
Asprokremmos Reservoir is a large man-made water body located near the village of Anarita in rural Cyprus. It spans across the Xeros River valley and is surrounded by open fields and low hills, with a water surface that reflects the sky and surrounding landscape.
Construction of the reservoir began in 1976 and was completed in 1982 to provide water storage for irrigation in the surrounding agricultural areas. It became the second-largest man-made water body in Cyprus and has supported farming across the region for decades.
The reservoir serves as both a functional farming resource and a gathering place where local families come to walk, picnic, and enjoy the open landscape. Its name, Asprokremmos, means 'white sink' in Greek and reflects the community's connection to the water and the land.
The site is easy to reach by car or bike and has simple pathways along the water's edge for walking. There are no major facilities nearby, so bring water and wear comfortable shoes if you plan to spend time here.
The reservoir has overflowed several times since opening, notably in 2019, 2013, 2004, and 1988, marking periods of abundant rainfall and successful water storage. These overflow events are seen by locals as signs of good conditions for farming and crop growth.
