Nicosia District, Administrative district in central Cyprus.
Nicosia District is an administrative region in central Cyprus that contains the capital city and several municipalities including Strovolos, Lakatamia, and Dali. The area spans from urban centers to more rural parts with villages and farmland scattered throughout.
The area developed from the medieval Vicomté province under Lusignan rule, which controlled the eastern section of today's district. Over the centuries, different powers took control, shaping how the region is organized now.
The district shows Greek and Turkish influences through its religious buildings, where Orthodox churches and mosques from different periods of rule stand side by side. These structures reflect how different communities have lived here over time.
The district is divided into two separate administrative areas, with different services operating in the northern and southern sections. Visitors should know that some services and infrastructure are organized differently depending on the area.
The area is home to Europe's last divided capital city, separated by a United Nations buffer zone since 1974. This division shapes daily life and the appearance of the city on both sides.
