Church of Cyprus

The Church of Cyprus functions as an independent Orthodox institution encompassing multiple dioceses across the island, with its central administration located in Nicosia.

The Council of Ephesus granted autocephalous status to the Church of Cyprus in 431, establishing its independence from the Patriarchate of Antioch.

The institution maintains numerous monasteries and parishes throughout Cyprus, where clergy conduct services following Eastern Orthodox traditions and Byzantine liturgical practices.

Visitors can access Orthodox churches and monasteries daily, with appropriate dress codes requiring covered shoulders and knees for both men and women.

During the Ottoman period, the Church of Cyprus retained both religious authority and administrative responsibilities, functioning as a representative institution for the Greek Cypriot population.
