Church of Cyprus

The Church of Cyprus is an independent Orthodox institution encompassing multiple dioceses across the island, administered from Nicosia. It operates numerous monasteries and parishes that shape the religious life of the island.

The institution gained independence through the Council of Ephesus in 431, freeing it from the Patriarchate of Antioch. During the Ottoman era, it took on administrative responsibilities alongside its religious role, serving as a representative for the Greek Cypriot population.

The institution holds deep meaning for the island's population, with clergy conducting daily services in churches and monasteries following Byzantine traditions. It serves as a spiritual and social anchor in the lives of many people across Cyprus.
