New Mosque, Ottoman mosque in Nicosia, Cyprus
The New Mosque is a mosque in central Nicosia, Cyprus, built with a central dome and a single minaret in Ottoman style. It sits within the old walled city, surrounded by a small courtyard with a few trees.
The site originally held a church that was converted into a mosque in 1571, after the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus. The current building dates to 1898 and replaced that earlier structure entirely.
The mosque is used daily by Nicosia's Muslim community and becomes especially active during religious holidays. Visitors can walk through the courtyard and observe the simple interior when no prayer is taking place.
The mosque is in the old city of Nicosia and easy to reach on foot from the main streets. Visitors should dress modestly and try to avoid prayer times if they want to look inside.
Four Ottoman tombs attributed to the Menteszade family stand on the mosque grounds and are easy to walk past without noticing. Family graves placed directly next to an active place of worship are rare in the region.
