Syðradalur, Coastal village in Klaksvík Municipality, Faroe Islands
Syðradalur is a small village on Kalsoy island in Klaksvík Municipality, located along the coast. It connects to neighboring settlements through an extensive tunnel system completed in 1985.
The village was founded in 1812 by settlers from Blankskáli, though the area had earlier settlement in the 17th century. It lay abandoned for a period before being resettled.
Traditional Faroese houses shape the village's character, reflecting how residents connect to their maritime surroundings. Fishing remains woven into daily life and links the community to the sea.
The village is easily reached by boat, with the MF Sam ferry service running multiple times daily between here and Klaksvík. Each journey takes roughly 20 minutes with typically 6 to 9 departures per day.
The community is home to just a handful of residents, making it among the tiniest inhabited settlements in the Faroe Islands. This sparse population highlights the remote character of the place and shows how thinly populated some parts of the archipelago can be.
