Listasavn Føroya, National art gallery in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands
Listasavn Føroya is an art museum on the Faroe Islands that displays contemporary and historic works across several gallery rooms. The building provides space for rotating exhibitions and allows visitors to explore artworks from different periods.
The gallery Listaskáli, designed by Jákup Pauli Gregoriussen, opened in 1970. The museum itself was established in 1989, and in 1993 a second gallery for historic art by Gregoriussen and Niels Frithiof Truelsen was added, giving a floor plan of 1,600 m². It is run by a four-member board with representatives of the Faroese government, Listafelag Føroya, the artists' union and Tórshavn city council.
The collection displays works by Faroese artists who represent local creative traditions through painting and sculpture. You can see how artists from these islands interpret their surroundings and daily life.
The museum sits at the northern end of Tórshavn's city park, about five minutes' walk from the Nordic House. It is open every day from 1 May to 31 August, but from 1 September to 30 April it opens Tuesday to Sunday only, closed on Mondays. It also closes on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January. A café and a shop selling art books and prints are in the building.
The museum holds the world's largest collection of Faroese visual art. Its permanent collection includes works by Sámal Joensen-Mikines (1906–79), the sculptor Janus Kamban (1913–2009) and Ruth Smith (1913–58). Each summer it normally hosts the Ólavsøkuframsýningin, the Faroe Islands Art Society's annual exhibition; in 2010 this showed 103 works by 38 artists, five of them first-time exhibitors.
