Dumai, Port city in Riau Province, Indonesia.
Dumai is a port city on the eastern coast of Sumatra in Riau Province, stretching along the shore of the Malacca Strait. The urban area divides into seven administrative districts with residential neighborhoods, industrial zones, and port facilities that together shape the life of this coastal settlement.
The settlement grew from a small hamlet and was officially declared an independent city on April 27, 1999, through Law Number 16. This separation from Bengkalis Regency marked the beginning of its development into an important port and industrial center on the Sumatran coast.
The name derives from Kedumaian, referring to a historical riverside landing spot where early settlers arrived. Today this origin shows in the coastal city's role as a meeting point where people of different languages and traditions come together.
Getting there is possible via the Trans-Sumatran Highway or Pinang Kampai Airport, which handles regional connections. For travel to Malaysia and other destinations, the international port offers regular ferry services across the strait.
The climate stays between 27 and 32 degrees Celsius (81 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit) throughout the year, with heavy rains falling especially in November and December. This constant warmth and coastal location create a tropical environment that shapes daily routines and the vegetation of the region.
