Tjong A Fie Mansion

Tjong A Fie Mansion is a two-story residence in Medan with 35 rooms arranged around an open-air courtyard following feng-shui principles. The rooms feature different decorative styles that combine traditional Chinese elements with Western design influences.

The house was built in 1900 by Hakka merchant Tjong A Fie, whose business ventures in railways and plantations shaped Medan's growth. Its structure reflects his economic success and his central role in the city's development during that period.

The house displays a blend of Chinese, Malay, and Art Deco styles throughout its rooms and decorations. Visitors can observe how different areas were historically arranged for various guests, reflecting the layered society of the era.

The house is easily reached via Ahmad Yani Street in Kesawan and can be visited on most days. Guided tours through the rooms help visitors understand the details of the furnishings and architecture.

The reception doorway is notably tall and combines traditional Chinese design principles with local craftsmanship. Throughout the house are hand-painted floor tiles and detailed wall paintings that show how artisans executed their work over a century ago.
