Gang Bengkok Old Mosque, Historic mosque in Kesawan district, Medan, Indonesia.
Gang Bengkok Old Mosque sits on Jalan Mesjid and features a main prayer hall with traditional Malay ceiling decorations and Persian-influenced entrance gates. The structure accommodates approximately 2000 worshippers and remains actively used for daily activities.
Construction began in 1874 under the supervision of Chinese merchant Tjong A Fie and was completed in 1889. The structure was then transferred to the Deli Sultanate.
The mosque displays a blend of Chinese and Malay design elements visible in its interior spaces. The hanging bee-pattern ceiling is a distinctive feature rooted in Malay building traditions and shapes the appearance of the main prayer hall.
Visitors should know this is an active place of worship with regular daily prayers and religious activities. It helps to check prayer times ahead of your visit and wear modest clothing when entering.
The land for this mosque was donated by Haji Muhammad Ali, known as Datuk Kesawan, while the Chinese merchant Tjong A Fie covered the construction costs. This unusual partnership between a local pilgrim and a foreign businessman shaped the site's story.
