Ekotourism Tangkahan

Located within Gunung Leuser National Park, Tangkahan spreads across 17,000 hectares of rainforest where visitors can explore rivers, waterfalls, and dense jungle paths.

During the 1990s, Tangkahan transformed from a logging community into an environmental conservation area after local residents decided to protect their natural resources.

The Karonese people of Tangkahan maintain their traditions through music performances and share their conservation knowledge with visitors through guided nature activities.

Reaching Tangkahan requires a three-hour drive from Medan, with accommodations ranging from basic guesthouses to camping sites along the Buluh River.

The Conservation Response Unit employs trained elephants and their mahouts to patrol Gunung Leuser National Park and prevent illegal activities within the protected areas.
