Azizi Mosque, Royal mosque in Tanjung Pura, Indonesia
The Azizi Mosque is a royal place of worship in Tanjung Pura featuring twenty-one copper domes and a minaret. The prayer hall displays marble work and is lit by Italian crystal chandeliers throughout the interior.
Construction began in 1889 under Sultan Abdul Aziz with materials brought from Penang and Singapore. These supplies traveled by ox-cart through the Batang Serangan river to reach the site.
The building combines Malay, Mughal, and Indo-Saracenic architectural styles that reflect the region's religious and cultural heritage. Three ceremonial entrances on different sides of the structure show how these diverse influences came together in the design.
The prayer hall is a square structure designed to accommodate around two thousand worshippers at once. Visitors should respect local customs and dress modestly when entering the building.
The heaviest of the twenty-one copper domes weighs around forty tons, making it a remarkable structural component. Chinese workers from the Langkat region carried out much of the construction work.
