Douglas, Capital and seaport in Isle of Man, United Kingdom.
Douglas is the capital of the Isle of Man, located on the east coast where two rivers meet the sea. The town occupies a crescent-shaped bay lined with a promenade and rows of Georgian and Victorian buildings.
During the 18th century the settlement grew into an important port through trade with Liverpool. In 1869 it was declared the official capital of the island and took on many administrative functions.
The Tynwald Court, housed in Legislative Buildings from 1894, continues the thousand-year tradition of the Isle of Man's parliamentary governance.
The harbor connects regularly with English coastal towns and offers access to heritage railway lines. Most sights lie along the seafront promenade and are within walking distance.
A stone tower on a rock in the middle of the bay once served as a refuge for shipwrecked sailors. Visitors can now reach it at low tide and view it from outside.
