Springfield Stadium, Art Nouveau stadium in Saint Helier, Jersey
Springfield Stadium is an Art Nouveau stadium in Saint Helier, Jersey, owned by the parish of Saint Helier. It has a covered main stand with seating and open terraced areas around the pitch, making it a compact ground used mainly for football.
The land was bought by the Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society in 1884 to host livestock and horticultural shows. Over the 20th century the site shifted away from its agricultural roots and became a dedicated sports ground.
The Art Nouveau facade of the main stand is one of the few examples of this architectural style on the island, and it gives the ground a look unlike most other sports venues. Inside, the space is used for football matches, public meetings, and local gatherings throughout the year.
The ground sits in the centre of Saint Helier and is easy to reach on foot from most parts of town. Access to the facilities depends on what is scheduled that day, so it is worth checking in advance before visiting.
In the weeks before the German occupation of Jersey in 1940, many local residents drove their cars onto the grounds and left them there, hoping the location would keep them safe. It is a rarely told story that places an ordinary sports ground at the centre of a personal moment of wartime uncertainty.
