Government House, Official residence in Saint Saviour, Jersey.
Government House is a two-story residence built on elevated ground in Saint Saviour, featuring mahogany interior details and a prominent central staircase. The structure displays classical architectural elements characteristic of grand private homes from the early 1800s.
The building was constructed in 1814 by shipowner François Janvrin and was originally named Belmont. It became the official residence of the Lieutenant-Governor in 1822.
The Government House functions as a ceremonial venue for state receptions and meetings with foreign dignitaries representing Jersey's constitutional monarchy.
The property sits on elevated ground in Saint Saviour and is accessible from the surrounding areas. Its hilltop location makes it visible from many parts of the island.
During World War II, German General von Schmettow, who commanded the Channel Islands, lived at the residence. This occupation period left marks on the island's architectural story.
