Nevis

Nevis is a Caribbean island forming one half of the two-island nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. A volcanic cone rises sharply from the coastline and tropical vegetation covers the interior slopes and valleys.

European settlers claimed the territory in the early seventeenth century and transformed it into a sugar economy relying on enslaved Africans. Abolition in the nineteenth century reshaped the social structure and economic life of the island.

Locals gather at roadside food stalls and rum shops where conversations flow to the sound of live calypso and reggae. Small fishing communities maintain daily routines that reflect generations of Caribbean island life.

Travelers arrive by air through a small airport or by ferry from neighboring Saint Kitts, a journey of about fifteen minutes across the channel. Most facilities and beaches line the western shoreline, making that side easier to explore on foot or by taxi.

One of the American founders, Alexander Hamilton, was born here before moving to North America. Several spots around the island commemorate his early years in the Caribbean.
