Grand Cape Mount County, County with coastal plains in western Liberia
Grand Cape Mount County is a region in western Liberia with coastal plains, rivers, and forested hills that rise from the Atlantic shore toward the interior. The landscape shifts from sandy beaches to rolling hills and is crossed by several waterways, including Lake Piso.
The region was first documented by Portuguese explorer Pedro de Sintra in 1461, when it received the name Cape du Mont. It later became an administrative division of Liberia in the 1800s and has remained a part of the country's structure since then.
Several ethnic communities live here, including the Kpelle, Mano, and Gbandi peoples, each with their own customs visible in daily life and local crafts. You can see these differences in how people dress, the markets they gather in, and the way homes are built.
Robertsport, the county capital, offers hotels and guesthouses as a base for exploring nearby protected areas and farming regions. The drier season is best for visiting, since roads and trails are more passable and easier to navigate.
The region receives heavy rainfall that keeps vegetation lush and green throughout the year. This creates favorable conditions for growing rice, cassava, and other crops that are central to feeding the local population.
