Sapo National Park, National park in Sinoe County, Liberia.
Sapo National Park is a protected forest reserve in southwestern Liberia characterized by dense tropical rainforest with tall trees, clear streams, and layered vegetation. The terrain consists largely of undisturbed woodland that spans the entire area.
The park was officially established in 1983, making it Liberia's first protected area. This designation began the country's formal conservation efforts.
The Krahn people and other local communities have used this forest for generations to gather medicinal plants and fresh water. This long relationship shapes how people today view and interact with different sections of the woodland.
Visitors need permission from authorities and must always be accompanied by a guide. Be prepared for muddy trails and heavy rainfall, especially during wet months when conditions become difficult.
The area contains one of the largest continuous stretches of primary rainforest in West Africa. Only one other forest region in the continent surpasses it in size.
