Neusiedl Lake, Endorheic lake in Burgenland, Austria and Győr-Moson-Sopron, Hungary

Neusiedl Lake is an endorheic body of water straddling the Austrian and Hungarian border in the Great Hungarian Plain. A broad reed belt separates the open water from the shoreline and provides habitat for hundreds of bird species.

The body of water dried out completely several times, most notably in the 1740s, around 1812, and in the late 1860s. These episodes turned the area into wet grassland before the water returned.

Archaeological findings near Lake Neusiedl indicate continuous human presence since 6000 BC, establishing the region as a major trading center through centuries.

The shallow water warms up quickly and remains comfortable for swimming in summer, while cycling paths along the shore make exploration easy. Many visitors come for sailing or windsurfing, as the open area offers favorable conditions.

Salinity levels vary noticeably depending on the season and rainfall, causing the aquatic communities to shift from year to year. Some sections resemble salt flats during dry spells before the rains return.
