Achensee Railway, Heritage steam railway in Jenbach, Austria
The Achensee Railway extends 6.78 kilometers from Jenbach station to Seespitz, featuring a meter-gauge track with both adhesion and rack sections.
Theodor Friedrich Freiherr von Dreifuss initiated the railway construction in 1886, leading to its official opening in 1889 by the Soenderop Company of Berlin.
The railway represents a significant engineering achievement from the late 19th century, connecting the town of Jenbach with Lake Achensee through mountain terrain.
The railway operates steam locomotives named Hannah, Georg, Hermann, and Theodor, climbing 440 vertical meters with gradients reaching 16 percent.
This mountain railway maintains Europe's oldest coal-fired steam engines still in regular service, operating on the original Riggenbach rack system from 1889.
