Zillertal Railway, narrow gauge railway line in Austria
The Zillertal Railway is a narrow-gauge train line that runs from Jenbach through the Zillertal Valley to Mayrhofen, covering about 20 miles (32 kilometers). It operates with steam locomotives and traditional wooden carriages, one of which is decorated with thousands of sparkling Swarovski crystals.
The railway opened in 1902 and was originally built to replace long road journeys and transport timber from the forests. It remains a functioning piece of transport history and continues to link communities in the region.
The train connects small villages along the valley and remains part of daily life for local residents. The journey shows how people live with the mountain landscape, from working farms to traditional houses decorated with flower boxes.
The railway is easily accessible from Jenbach and operates regularly throughout the season, with information and tickets available at the station. The gentle pace and low speed make it a comfortable way to explore the valley without rushing.
One carriage is fully decorated with sparkling Swarovski crystals, reflecting Tyrol's long tradition of craftsmanship, while on some days the steam engine puffs out rings of smoke that captivate both train enthusiasts and children alike.
