Burgruine Glanegg, Castle ruin in Glanegg, Austria
Burgruine Glanegg is a medieval castle perched on a hill in the Glan valley. The remains feature stone walls and a round tower that provide glimpses of the original fortress design.
The castle was first mentioned in written records in 1121 under the rule of Duke Henry III of Carinthia. Over the following centuries it changed hands among various noble families before coming under Habsburg control in the early 1500s.
The ruins sit in a place long inhabited by those seeking shelter on high ground. The remaining walls and tower still convey the power and authority such fortifications once commanded.
The ruins are freely accessible year-round with no entrance fee or required tours. Wear sturdy shoes for the climb up the hill, as the terrain is uneven and some slopes are steep.
The fortress endured multiple attacks during Turkish invasions between 1473 and 1478 without losing its structural stability. Despite these violent threats, it managed to retain much of its original stonework until today.
