Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art, Folk art museum in Josefstadt district, Vienna, Austria.
The Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art is a folk culture museum in the Josefstadt district of Vienna, housed in the Baroque Schönborn Garden Palace. The building has several gallery rooms displaying objects connected to everyday life and folk art traditions from Central European regions.
The museum was founded in 1895 by Michael Haberlandt and Wilhelm Hein, and it first occupied a space in the Vienna Stock Exchange. In 1917 it moved to the Baroque Schönborn Palace, where it has remained ever since.
The collection shows furniture, ceramics, textiles, and tools from the former regions of the Habsburg monarchy, revealing how people lived and worked there. What stands out is how strongly regional identity was expressed through the decoration of ordinary household objects.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, with late opening on Thursdays. The rooms are well signposted and wheelchair accessible, making it easy to move around at your own pace.
The museum is home to the Mostothek, Vienna's only space dedicated to alcoholic fruit drinks, where visitors can taste traditional regional specialties. This connects the displayed objects directly to a living taste experience.
