Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art, Folk art museum in Josefstadt district, Vienna, Austria.
The Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art is a museum in the Josefstadt district housed in the Baroque Schönborn Garden Palace. The collection contains more than 300,000 objects documenting European folk traditions and everyday life.
The museum was founded in 1895 by Michael Haberlandt and Wilhelm Hein and initially occupied space at the Vienna Stock Exchange. The institution moved to the Baroque Schönborn Palace in 1917, where it remains today.
The collections display furniture, ceramics, textiles, and tools that show how people in former Austro-Hungarian regions lived and worked. Visitors can observe the different ways communities decorated homes, made clothing, and crafted objects for daily use.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00, with extended hours until 20:00 on Thursdays. The entire building is fully wheelchair accessible and the galleries are easy to navigate.
The museum houses the Mostothek, Vienna's only association dedicated to alcoholic fruit beverages, where visitors can taste traditional regional drinks. This feature connects the museum's collection directly to living taste experiences.
