Palais Schönborn, Baroque palace in Josefstadt, Vienna, Austria
Palais Schönborn is a Baroque palace in Vienna's Josefstadt district featuring ornate facades and stucco work throughout. The three-story building displays the characteristic elements of Vienna's Baroque style with detailed ornamentation and generous interior proportions.
A high-ranking imperial official commissioned the palace in 1706, and prominent architect Lukas von Hildebrandt completed it eight years later. In the 20th century, the building was converted into a museum to preserve and display folk collections.
The palace displays traditional Austrian crafts and folk practices through its exhibits in the galleries. Visitors can see how people once lived, worked, and celebrated in their daily lives.
The site is easily accessible by public transport in Vienna and located in a walkable residential area. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as exploring the interior galleries and staircases requires some walking.
The grounds once featured splendid tulip gardens that shaped the appearance of the estate. A famous Rembrandt painting hung in the halls for a time before being sold and moved elsewhere.
