St. Georgenberg-Fiecht Abbey, Benedictine monastery in Vomp, Austria
St. Georgenberg-Fiecht Abbey is a Benedictine monastery situated on a rocky outcrop above the Inn Valley in Vomp. The Baroque church was completed in 1750 and features three apses and a domed choir crossing that serves as the center of the complex.
The monastery began as a hermitage in the 10th century and received official Benedictine recognition in 1138. After several fires, the community moved to Fiecht in 1708, where it remained for several centuries.
The church displays ceiling frescoes by Matthäus Günther and elaborate stucco work by the Feichtmayr brothers that fill the interior with artistic details. These works shape how the space looks and reveal the importance the community placed on visual art.
The path to the monastery crosses the Hohe Brücke, a 15th-century stone footbridge that stands at a significant height above the valley. Mountain paths around the site allow visitors to explore the surrounding area and discover various viewpoints.
After more than three centuries at Fiecht, the monastic community returned to its original location in 2019 and resettled at Georgenberg. This move marked the end of a long absence and reconnected the present-day monks with the site's earliest origins.
