Vienna State Opera house, Opera house in Innere Stadt, Vienna, Austria.
Vienna State Opera is an opera house in Innere Stadt, Vienna, Austria. The building follows Renaissance Revival style and holds a main auditorium with 1709 seats, along with marble halls displaying statues and paintings throughout its corridors.
The opening took place on May 25, 1869, with Mozart's Don Giovanni. After destruction by bombing in March 1945, the building was fully rebuilt in the following years.
The house is one of the few stages worldwide that presents a different performance every night, with singers and orchestra often holding just a single rehearsal before the premiere. The tradition of the New Year's Concert by the Philharmonic has been maintained here for decades and broadcast to many countries.
Visitors can buy standing room tickets for 3 to 4 euros per person, available 80 minutes before performances begin. Entrances are located around the building, and cloakrooms sit on the ground floor near the main access points.
The staircase in the entrance area displays seven statues, each representing one of the liberal arts: architecture, sculpture, painting, music, dance, poetry, and drama. Each figure holds attributes that point to its particular field.
