Vienna Central Cemetery

The Vienna Central Cemetery extends across 2.5 million square meters, containing 330,000 graves and accommodating approximately three million burials within its grounds.

The cemetery opened on November 1st, 1874, following a carefully planned development to address Vienna's expanding population during the late nineteenth century industrialization.

The grounds include sections dedicated to multiple religious faiths, including Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Eastern Orthodox churches, representing Vienna's religious diversity.

Visitors enter through Gate 2, where they can rent audio guides, purchase cemetery maps, and access the main pathway leading to notable memorials.

The cemetery functions as a nature reserve with wilderness zones supporting local wildlife, including rare European hamsters, deer, and numerous bird species.
