Simmering, Administrative district in southeast Vienna, Austria
Simmering is Vienna's 11th district and contains residential neighborhoods, industrial areas, and green spaces across its layout. The district blends older settlement cores with newer development areas that shape the region's character.
The district was created in 1892 when Simmering merged with Kaiserebersdorf and parts of other villages during a period of rapid urban expansion. This merger created a new administrative unit for Vienna's growing eastern regions.
The name Simmering comes from an early settler and continues to shape the district's identity today. The area keeps traces of its rural past in street names and local sites that still recall the former villages.
The U3 metro line terminates in this district and connects it to the city center and airport. Easy access to main traffic routes makes orientation and mobility throughout the region straightforward.
Four large gas containers from 1896 were converted into a modern residential and commercial center, showing how industrial monuments gain new purposes. This transformation is an example of how the city preserves its industrial past while creating contemporary uses.
