Rennbahn-Freudenau, Horse racing venue in Leopoldstadt, Austria
Rennbahn-Freudenau is a protected flat racing venue situated in Vienna's Prater park, within the Leopoldstadt district. It has several grandstands with cast iron structures that give the site its historical character.
The track was founded in 1839 on a meadow known as the Fleischhacker, and it soon became one of the leading horse racing venues in Austria. The arrival of Emperor Franz Joseph I for the inauguration of new grandstands in 1858 added to its standing.
The Freudenau has long been a place where horse racing was as much a social event as a sport, drawing people from across Vienna's various social circles. Today, visitors can still feel that sense of occasion when they walk through the old grandstands on race days.
The venue sits within the Prater park, making it easy to combine a visit with a walk through the surrounding green area. Opening times depend on the racing schedule, so it is worth checking before you go.
The Kaiserloge, a viewing box built in 1870 to a design by Adolf Feszty, was reserved for the imperial family and their guests. It is one of the few surviving structures of its kind from that period still standing on a racing venue in Austria.
