Stadtlau East Railway Bridge, Railway bridge in Donaustadt, Austria
The Stadtlau East Railway Bridge is a railway viaduct in Donaustadt with a steel structure that crosses multiple waterways. The structure connects the Leopoldstadt and Donaustadt districts and carries both passenger and freight trains across its tracks daily.
The original structure dates from 1870 and was replaced in 1931 with a new construction better suited to modern rail traffic. A major elevation of about 4.5 meters took place in 1995 to allow river traffic to pass underneath.
The bridge takes its name from the Stadtlau area and connects two important districts of Vienna across waterways. Today it stands as a protected monument that visitors notice while walking along the Danube, forming part of the city's landscape.
The structure can be viewed from several vantage points along the Danube, particularly from the riverbanks. Keep in mind that this is an active railway viaduct and access to the tracks is not permitted or safe.
During the 1990s reconstruction, engineers used an innovative technique where they built the new bridge next to the old one and then slid it precisely into position. This method was necessary to keep train traffic running while construction was underway.
