Donaustadt, Administrative district in Vienna, Austria
Donaustadt is the twenty-second district of the Austrian capital and includes eight different localities such as Aspern, Breitenlee, and Essling along the riverbank. More than half of the surface consists of meadows, parks, and open countryside, giving the area a rural character.
In 1809, the Battle of Aspern-Essling took place here, where Archduke Charles led Austrian troops against Napoleon's army. The area remained agricultural for a long time before becoming a district of Vienna in the twentieth century.
This urban area takes its name from the Danube and stretches along the eastern riverbank, where wide paths invite cycling and walking along the water. Many residents use the expansive green areas on weekends for picnics and relaxation near the water.
The U2 subway line connects the area to the center, complemented by trams and several bus lines running through the different localities. Most green spaces and riverside paths are accessible at all times and are suitable for walks in any season.
The Blumengärten Hirschstetten gardens are located in the district and display a wide selection of plants from different climate zones in themed gardens. The Vienna International Centre also stands here and serves as the seat of several United Nations organizations.
