Reichsbrücke, Multi-level bridge in Leopoldstadt, Austria.
Reichsbrücke is a double-decker crossing over the Danube in Vienna, linking Leopoldstadt with Donaustadt across a span of 528 meters (1732 feet). The upper level carries six lanes of road traffic, while the lower level holds railway tracks and the U1 metro line.
The first crossing at this location opened in 1876 as Crown Prince Rudolf Bridge, serving the growing city as a major link across the river. After the collapse of the previous structure in 1976, the current version was built by 1980.
The name refers to the historical monarchy and remains part of everyday conversation among locals crossing the Danube. Many residents from surrounding districts use the wide walkways as a daily route between home and work, making the span a natural part of neighborhood life.
Cycling paths and pedestrian walkways run on both sides of the roadway, allowing safe crossing for walkers and riders throughout the day. The Donauinsel metro station sits directly at the span and offers quick access to the island and neighboring districts.
The crossing carries around 50,000 vehicles each day, making it one of the busiest Danube passages in Vienna. On the lower deck, the railway line connects the right riverbank with Wien Hauptbahnhof and allows continuous train movement through the city.
