Ares Tower, Modern office tower in Donau City, Vienna, Austria
The Ares Tower is a roughly 100-metre office high-rise in Donau City, in Vienna's 22nd district, Donaustadt, built from 1999 to 2001 to plans by Heinz Neumann. It has 26 floors, a gross floor area of 61,000 m² and about 40,000 m² of rentable space. It was finished in summer 2001, almost at the same time as the neighbouring Tech Gate Vienna.
The building was completed in 2001 by architect Heinz Neumann as part of Vienna's waterfront development. It represents a phase of modern urban renewal in the Donau City area.
The tower takes its name from Ares, the Greek god of war, continuing the practice of naming Donau City buildings after mythological figures; the neighbouring DC Towers follow the same scheme. The name is the only mythological reference on the building itself, a plain office block.
The Ares Tower stands on the Donauplatte in Donau City, in Vienna's 22nd district, Donaustadt. The U1 metro line serves the nearby Kaisermühlen VIC station, and the tower is reached on foot from there. Bamboo planters line the base of the building, where winds are strongest at ground level.
Tall bamboo plants surround the base of the tower to reduce wind effects created by its design. This detail shows how the structure was carefully planned to manage environmental forces.
