Scholars Pavilion

Scholars Pavilion, Persian monument at United Nations complex, Vienna, Austria

The Scholars Pavilion is a Persian monument at the United Nations Vienna Office complex, featuring four pillars that support an ornate dome. The structure is covered with ornamental patterns, detailed carvings, and geometric designs showcasing traditional Persian craftsmanship.

Iran presented this monument to the United Nations Vienna Office in 2009 as a gift honoring Persian scientific heritage. The construction draws from classical Persian architecture, paying tribute to an architectural legacy spanning thousands of years.

The pavilion houses statues of four Persian scholars—Omar Khayyam, Al-Biruni, Rhazes, and Avicenna—positioned in alcoves beneath the dome. These figures represent the scientific achievements that emerged from Persia and shaped knowledge across the world.

The monument stands on the UN Vienna grounds and is accessible during the complex's operating hours. Visitors should note the area is formal and busy, so it's best to dress appropriately and allow time for security checks.

The structure blends Achaemenid architectural elements with the traditional Persian fire temple design called chahartaq. This fusion creates a rare architectural form seldom seen outside Persia.
