Vienna lighthouse, Ornamental lighthouse on Danube Island, Austria
Vienna Lighthouse is a white tower near Reichsbrucke on Danube Island standing about 105 feet (32 meters) tall. A spiral staircase leads to a viewing gallery topped with an illuminated glass dome.
The structure began as a stage set for Wagner's Der Fliegende Hollander opera at the 1989 Bregenz Festival. It was later relocated and rebuilt permanently on Danube Island as an installation.
The lighthouse marks the entrance to Sunken City, a seasonal entertainment district where visitors find restaurants and clubs operating from May through September along the Danube.
The lighthouse is easily accessible via the Donauinsel U1 metro station on Danube Island. You can walk to it anytime, though conditions vary with weather and seasonal changes.
The tower doubles as a support structure for weather cameras and broadcast equipment. This practical function means the landmark serves both visitors and technical operations along the waterfront.
