St. Marx Cemetery is a walled burial ground of about 60,000 m² in Vienna's Landstraße district, enclosed by an unplastered brick wall. Its almost rectangular layout holds 5,635 preserved graves out of more than 8,000 originally, with the oldest headstones along the cemetery wall. The Mozart memorial is a pale stone column on a stepped base, with a winged figure leaning against it and cut flowers piled at its foot.
The cemetery was founded in 1784 and operated until 1874 as one of Vienna's main burial grounds outside the city center. Its long history shows how important this place was for the city before other cemeteries opened.
