Waidhofen an der Ybbs, Statutory city in Lower Austria, Austria
Waidhofen an der Ybbs is a statutory city along the Ybbs River in Lower Austria, situated at an elevation of 356 meters (1,168 feet). The town spans about 131 square kilometers and is marked by seven historical towers, including the 50-meter Stadtturm from the 1530s and the medieval Ybbsturm gate tower.
The town was first documented in 1186 and became a regional economic center for iron and steel production by the 14th century. This craft tradition shaped the area's development and prosperity for centuries to come.
The Rothschild castle displays modern art forms through a glass cube on its tower and a crystal room designed by Hans Hollein. These contemporary additions merge with the older structure and shape the place's character today.
The old town with its towers and historic streets is easy to explore on foot. The location by the river offers good conditions for walks, especially if you take time to explore the different areas of the center.
On the northwestern side of the first city tower, the clock face shows 11:45 and remains fixed at that time. The dial commemorates the successful defense against Turkish troops in 1532.
